Hide Tanning

Hide Tanning

DIY Homesteader Festival Workshop:

Hide Tanning

If you value the insight and skill required to tan hides yourself, spend a day learning this ancient, functional and practical art with Carl Froese, of Manitoba Buckskin, who himself learned from many women – carriers of generational cultural expertise and artistry – who have shared their traditional knowledge of working with moose hides. You’ll learn the step-by-step process of how to brain-tan moose hides; from fresh hide to finished smoked leather.

Hands-on: While participants won’t be completing all the steps of the hide-tanning process themselves (as it takes longer than the time available), there will be opportunities for participation in various steps.

Accessibility: This workshop takes place in an outdoor shelter on pasture. We can have a desk and chair available at the workshop space upon request in the event it is not accessible for a participant to sit on the ground or on a hay bale. In terms of accessibility, Carl says, “The process of hide tanning is physically arduous.”
