We stand in solidarity with the Indigenous Peoples of the land now called Canada. Our hearts are wrenched with grief and pound with rage. Our hands are ready to take action.

While I (Kris) have been connecting with individuals to provide herbal support where needed, it’s time for more. I recently had a vision of a community of respectful volunteer foragers harvesting supportive herbs for our Indigenous neighbours who are experiencing so much pain. To take on that labour while they carry the labour of grief, loss, and hopefully rest.

I’m not sure where to start with this. Other than the land we’re on - there are healing plants here. I will make space to help guide some harvest here. Are you interested to give your time to harvest? Is anyone here or any organization willing to bring the herbs to where they can be distributed? Herbalists who can make teas or other medicines to gift? Let’s talk.

Sun’s out, hens out. Ok, so it’s actually a cloudy day. And it’s more like: grasshoppers out, hens out! These ladies feasted today in the areas outside the garden. Hoping this will help make a dent in the g-hop population so that our medicinal herbs for @awakenapotheca CSA & u-pick aren’t munched away... Also, the coop is getting a new look - this is the first coat of paint. Maybe some barn board trim...?

Weekend DIY project... In 2019, I (Kris) built this wash stand for the fest. It was for washing your bring-your-own-dishes. This weekend, Mike surprised me by building this amazing hose stand. Now I can wash @awakenapotheca roots and roots from the veg garden that much easier. My hands are free to handle the roots instead of wrestling a hose. Small project, big function. And now at the next workshop or fest, you can rinse things hands-free, too!

It sure is dry out there. The land crunches underfoot. In many ways, community is cracking. And for some, hope is quite parched. We are still wringing out drops of hope here... to quench the land’s thirst, and for a long drink of community and togetherness. While we are sad to say the fest won’t happen this year in its usual form, we’re working on some intimate workshops (throughout summer and something special on Aug 14&15), and will be running a u-pick medicinal herb farm (find us @awakenapotheca), so there will be opportunities to connect- with each other, with the land, with the plants - and be sure to say hello to these sweet hens. // What are you interested in learning with a small group this summer?

Two sets of paired nest boxes went up today, in hopes that the gardens will provide a feast of pesky-to-us,but tasty-to-birds, grubs and bugs. The idea behind the paired boxes is that while some birds won’t nest close to their own species, they will allow birds of another species to occupy a neighbouring box. We found lots of info online through The Cornell Lab of Ornithology and also a helpful video by Takota Coen on YouTube. Do you employ nest boxes for integrated pest management (or to simply enjoy more feathered friends)?

Not a glamorous farm life photo, yet a reality of country life. This is a great time of year to practice observation of water patterns on your yard or farmland. Walk the land, or traverse it in the way that works for you, noting low spots where water pools, how water flows, and which areas are dry. This info can inform how you interact with the land this season and into the future - how you can manage water, where you can plant moisture-loving (or drought-tolerant) plants and trees, where a pond might be appropriate, and more.
