Two sets of paired nest boxes went up today, in ho

Two sets of paired nest boxes went up today, in hopes that the gardens will provide a feast of pesky-to-us,but tasty-to-birds, grubs and bugs. The idea behind the paired boxes is that while some birds won’t nest close to their own species, they will allow birds of another species to occupy a neighbouring box. We found lots of info online through The Cornell Lab of Ornithology and also a helpful video by Takota Coen on YouTube. Do you employ nest boxes for integrated pest management (or to simply enjoy more feathered friends)?

Not a glamorous farm life photo, yet a reality of country life. This is a great time of year to practice observation of water patterns on your yard or farmland. Walk the land, or traverse it in the way that works for you, noting low spots where water pools, how water flows, and which areas are dry. This info can inform how you interact with the land this season and into the future - how you can manage water, where you can plant moisture-loving (or drought-tolerant) plants and trees, where a pond might be appropriate, and more.

Hey, fest friends... We started a herb farm! A dream years in the making. We finally broke ground in 2019, and grew and harvested our first medicinals in 2020. This year we’re inviting you into the fun! You can find details of our 🌿 Fresh Medicinal Herb U-Pick, 🌸 Fresh Medicinal Herb CSA, and bulk fresh & dried herbs over at @awakenapotheca. Looking forward to seeing you in the gardens, at workshops, in the campground, and at our guest retreat spaces this summer!

Hard to believe that the Mushroom Cultivation work

Hard to believe that the Mushroom Cultivation workshop with @rivercityfungi at the 2019 fest was tucked into an enchanted little spot right down one of these forest rows. Unfortunately, the squirrels took over that mushroom bed, so we’ll have to try again. But, that just means more opportunity to learn and grow - and try to outsmart the squirrels! Can’t wait to have you here at the farm again once this lane is lined with anise hyssop, and the horsetail waves hello from forest floor.

Well, we sure are missing you all these days! We’ve been quiet as we walk though a tough family illness (Kris’ dad), but we think often of the fest community. 🌑 This new moon has us dreaming of cultivating new skills, inspiring and being inspired, radical talks around the campfire, wild and free children running in the pines, and well really, just pining away to simply be together. 🌲We’ll be checking in more soon to find out how we can cultivate community & learning with you in 2021. Can’t wait to hear your ideas! And always, feel welcome to share them anytime, in post comments, DMs, or emails.❤️

Exploring cold storage options for this year. A li

Exploring cold storage options for this year. A little late in the game, but better late than never. We’re thinking for easy access (our basement is a crawl space that isn’t a joy to get to), we’ll insulate an armoire type piece of furniture in the attached (un-heated) garage, and vent it to the house for warm air. Now that we’re headed in that direction, we’re contemplating making another in our mud room (vented to the outside) to replace our second fridge - it would store butter, eggs, ferments, etc. You can see an example of something similar by Takota Coen on YouTube. What set up do you have, or dream of having?
